The inclusion of the Leonberger into the utility group is problematic, because he has so much in common with other breeds from the working group. The Leonberger is a friendly dog, but if he is asked to watch the house, he will prove to be an outstanding guard. He has a middle-length coat which is not difficult to groom unless you factor in its size. The Leonberger’s coat color varies from tawny through golden to flaxen, and many dogs of this breed have a kind of a black mask on the muzzle.
The Leonberger’s attitude towards exercise reflects his attitude towards life and people -- he is easygoing and friendly. This dog usually doesn’t hurry, preferring a light trot. He swims well in any weather, and because of his size, he feels better in the country. The Leonberger is the perfect buddy.
